COLLEGE BASEBALL: Jeffries-led Bears win again, off to 5-1 start

HICKORY – Clayton Jeffries’ two-run double in the eighth inning on Saturday carried Lenoir-Rhyne University to a 9-7 home baseball victory over West Virginia State.

The Bears completed a three-game sweep by winning, improving to 5-1.

LRU junior outfielder Grant Fuller had two hits and drove in two runs in the victory, and senior Landon Whitson (1-0) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to gain a win.

West Virginia State rallied from a 4-0 deficit after one inning and eventually led 7-5 by the middle of the sixth inning.

Daniel Rutherford and Jonathan Cline each drove in two runs for the Yellow Jackets, and Matthew Washington (0-1) took the loss.

Whitson made his third appearance of the season and he hasn’t given up a run while picking up a win and two saves.

The Bears will go on the road for their next games on Tuesday, playing a make-up doubleheader against Barton in Asheboro. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
