MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Hot-shooting Bears top Mars Hill, sit fifth in league standings

MARS HILL – Shooting 64 percent in the second half, the Lenoir-Rhyne University men rolled past  Mars Hill 96-79 on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) basketball.

Djibril Diallo scored 23 points and Jon Jean had a season-high 10 assists as the Bears improved to 18-8 overall and 11-7 in the conference. Mars Hill dropped to 9-16, 3-14.

LRU is in fifth place, one game back of Catawba and Mars Hill, with Queens and Lincoln Memorial atop the standings.

The top four men’s teams will have home games in the SAC tournament that begins on March 6 with first-round games before the tournament moves to Greenville, S.C., for the final two rounds.

On Saturday, the Bears’ Jean just missed a double-double, scoring eight points, and he had only one turnover while grabbing three rebounds and collecting one steal.

Diallo was seven of 13 shooting and hit five 3-ponters and added four assists and three rebounds.

Also for the Bears, Darius Simmons scored 12 points, Cory Thomas added 10 and Bertrand Awana added eight points and seven boards.

Ja’Shawn Brooks paced the Lions with 31 points on 11of 20 shooting that included hitting four of eight 3-point attempts.

LRU’s next game is Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Catawba for a SAC contest.
