HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men will try to start another win streak on Saturday when Anderson (S.C.) visits for a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) basketball game that begins at 4 p.m. at Shuford Gym.

The Bears are tied with Catawba for third place in the league, one game back of Lincoln Memorial and 3 ½ games behind conference leader Queens.

LRU had a three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday night, falling 103-101 in a league game against Newberry (S.C.) played on the road.

The Bears (16-5, 9-4) had the lead after a bucket by Mason Hawks with 3.6 seconds to play before Newberry (8-13, 3-10) drew a foul that netted three free throws and hit them to win.

LRU shot 57.7 percent and Newberry shot 52.1 percent in a game that featured 133 field goals attempts.

Six Bears reached double-figure scoring, led by senior guard Jon Jean with 19 points (he added eight assists). R.J. Gunn scored 17 points while Deontae Weaver had 10 points and nine rebounds for LRU.

Marshall Lange, who hit the winning three throws, had 21 points to lead the Wolves with T.J. Brown adding 19 points.

LRU converted 13 of its 3-pointers, hitting eight in the opening half, and Newberry made eight.

Newberry outrebounded the Bears 39-31 and had a 52-36 scoring edge in the paint.
