COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Williams wins LRU’s Lott Award; Maiden’s Huff tops offense

WILLIAMS

HICKORY – Sherrod Williams has won the Ronnie Lott Heavy Hitter of the Week award for Lenoir-Rhyne University football after leading the Bears past North Greenville, S.C.

Williams, a junior linebacker from Edison, Ga., had six tackles – four solo and two assists – last Saturday when LRU won 51-24 on the road to land head coach Drew Cronic his first victory as Bears head coach. Williams also added a pass breakup and forced two fumbles.

LRU (1-1) plays its home debut and first South Atlantic Conference (SAC) game on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Other weekly award winners for the Bears from the North Greenville game, as announced by an LRU press release, are Xzavion Huff, Dan Louba, Kyle Dugger, Gunnar Anderson and Joshua Waddell-Stewart.

HUFF

Huff, a sophomore from Maiden, got the nod as the Offensive Player of the Week after erupting for three second-quarter TDs. He torched the Crusaders for 149 yards on scoring runs of 42 and 38 yards and caught a 69-yard pass for a TD. He finished with six carries for 85 yards.

LOUBA

Louba, a sophomore defensive end from Harrisburg, was selected Defensive Player of the Week. He dominated in the trenches, finishing with 1 1/2 tackles for lost yardage and 1 ½ sacks. He had three tackles.

Dugger, a junior from Fayetteville, Ga., was picked as the Special Teams Player of the Week after he had 27 yards on punt returns and 24 yards on kickoffs. He returned one punt for a TD but it was called back due to a penalty.

Anderson, a freshman quarterback from Taylorsville (Alexander Central High), and Waddell-Stewart, a sophomore linebacker from Hope Mills, earned Offensive and Defensive Scout Team Players of the Week, respectively.
