COLLEGE BASEBALL: Jeffries’ ninth-inning homer lifts Bears past Catawba

SALISBURY – A ninth-inning solo home run allowed Lenoir-Rhyne University to win a conference baseball game on Friday night in which it pulled a triple play.

Clayton Jeffries homered in the ninth inning to lift the visiting Bears past Catawba 3-2, leaving LRU at 14-6 overall and 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) heading into a doubleheader against the Indians on Saturday.

The Bears and Indians (7-10, 3-1) play a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. at Newman Park.

Jeffries, from Lakeland, Fla., finished with two hits and drove in two runs.

Junior Hunter Martin started for LRU, allowing one run over five innings and striking out seven. Senior Landon Whitson gained the win in relief, improving to 2-0, after getting the game’s final five outs.

Jacob Nester had a run-scoring single for Catawba, and Clay Young (1-2) took the loss.

The Bears pulled a triple play in the fourth inning.

The win by LRU snapped a four-game win streak for Catawba, which came in off a three-game sweep in which it outscored Coker 57-10.
