WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: After big Sophomore Night win, Red Hawks close with weekend road games

HICKORY – After winning big to honor its sophomores on Sophomore Night this week, the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women will close their regular season with two games this weekend.

On Saturday, the Red Hawks (23-5, 18-2 Region X) face Brunswick Community College at 4 p.m. in Leland. The regular-season finale is Sunday, a 2 p.m. game at Johnston Community College.

CVCC won 96-47 at home on Thursday over Lenoir Community College at the Tarlton Complex, getting 30 points from sophomore Shaniya Lester. Sophomore Joyous Wilson added a career-best 18 points. A third Red Hawks sophomore, Tanisha Wall, had her ninth double-double of the season on Thursday with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

CVCC had 33 assists, including a team-high 10 from sophomore Nikkyana McCaskill and seven more from sophomore Tory Agrusa.

The Red Hawks led 50-19 by halftime, outscoring the Lancers (3-21, 1-21) 30-8 in the second quarter. Lester led the way in the first half with a team-best 14 points.

Justice Carr paced Lenoir Community College with 15 points and Dellasia Freeman added 10.
