COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears prep for home opener on Wednesday against Barton

HICKORY –Lenoir-Rhyne University’s first home baseball game of the season is Wednesday, with a first pitch against Barton College at 5 p.m.

The Bears (1-2) started their season with a three0-game series against Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Rollins won the third and final game of the series 3-2 on Sunday, winning on a ninth-inning walk-off suicide squeeze by Cameron Meehan.

Rollins 3, LRU 2 (Sunday)

Clayton Jeffries lead the Bears, going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs, but LRU was limited to five hits and left eight runners stranded.

Meehan went 2-for-4 for Rollins and Sam LaFontain drove in two runs.

Reliever Hunter Martin took the loss for LRU, pitching one-third of an inning. Alex Shriazi was the Bears’ starter, going four innings and giving up two runs on three hits and walking one. Kana Butler and Kevin LaRosa pitched two innings each and gave up one hit.

LRU 5, Rollins 1 (Saturday)

The Bears had 12 hits and E.J. Ranel drove in three runs as LRU picked up its first victory of the season.

Paul Hall, a transfer from Virginia Tech, worked five innings, struck out six and gave up four hits to gain a win for LRU.

Nolan Flachofsky gave up one run, one hit and struck out three over four innings of relief to gain a save for LRU.

Grant Fuller, Jeffries and Matthew Freeman had multiple hit games for the Bears.

Rollins 5, LRU 0 (Friday)

Cameron Enck retired 16 straight batters and was perfect over five innings as Rollins downed LRU. He struck out seven and gave up one hit over seven innings.

LRU got three hits, drew one walk and struck out 10 times.

Jared Herron led Rollins with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Jake Conroy took the loss for LRU, giving up two runs. He gave up two hits and struck out three.
