COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears collect 12th win by beating Belmont Abbey

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University reached 12 wins in baseball by beating visiting Belmont Abbey 12-8 on Wednesday night at Bears Field.

The Bears improved to 12-16 by winning and left the Crusaders at 12-18.

LRU has won two of three against Belmont Abbey this season and they’ll play again on March 27 in Hickory at 6 p.m.

LRU begins a four-game road trip with a three-game series at Georgia Southwestern that begins with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

Hunter Jackson, a senior from Cherryville, had three hits, two of them doubles, and drove in two runs and scored three to spark the Bears’ win.

Grant Fuller and Caleb Beaty each drove in two runs and Will Jones drew a season-high three walks for LRU.

Reliever Michael Allen earned his first win of the year after going four innings. He gave up one run, three hits and struck out four after replacing Matt Ranson.

Richard DeLaCruz led the Crusaders by going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. Belmont Abbey’s No. 1 through No. 5 hitters combined to go 8-for-16, with Ben Gobbel, Mason Dodd and Derrick Dabney each driving in two runs.

LRU has scored more than 10 runs in six games this season and won all six.

Belmont Abbey 11, LRU 7 (Tuesday)

In a game that featured seven errors and 18 walks, the Crusaders won at home.

Beatty went 2-for-3 and walked twice to lead LRU and Zack Shoemaker had two hits and Fuller drove in two runs with a double.

Brett Fulk (2-1) started and took the loss for the Bears, giving up six earned runs. He allowed three hits and walked five but did not get an out in the second inning.

Catcher Zach Aehlert had two hits and drove in four runs for the Crusaders with Dodd also driving in two runs.

Reliever Kain Kiser worked two innings for the Bears, striking out five.
