WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne wins at Wingate for first time since 1998

WINGATE – Sophomore midfielder Aqsa Mushtaq scored early in the second overtime on Saturday as Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women clipped Wingate 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) soccer.

In a match played at Pride Park, the Bears got the goal from Mushtaq just two minutes, 16 seconds into the second extra period to win and improved to 10-41, 5-2-1.

Wingate dropped to 8-3, 7-2 after Bears senior Alayna Morris made four saves and picked up her sixth shutout of the season. Morris played the entire match, as did Wingate goalkeeper Alexis Jones (four saves).

LRU led in shots taken 10-9.

The goal by Mushtaq was her fourth of the season and her second-game winner of the season.

The victory was the first at Wingate for the Bears since 1998; they tied at Wingate in 2002, 2013 and 2015. It assures the Bears of an eighth straight winning record in the SAC regular season.

LRU next plays at Catawba on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a conference match.
