MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne hands defending national champ Wingate first league loss

WINGATE – With a goal by Ignacio de Goya coming at the 15:37 mark, Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men edged Wingate 1-0 on Saturday to hand the Bulldogs their first conference loss.

de Goya collected his 11th goal of the year on an assist by Ruben Morillas as the Bears (9-2-3, 5-2-2) won a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match.

The pass got through the defense left of the box and de Goya lined it into the opposite corner for the only goal.

Wingate, the defending NCAA Division II champion, came in ranked No. 24 in Division II.

LRU outshot Wingate 18-6.

The Bears’ Zach King made one save while Pablo Jara had three for Wingate.

LRU’s next match is Saturday at home for Senior Day against Newberry, S.C., with a 4:30 p.m. start.
