WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne topples visiting Lees-McRae

HICKORY – Two first-half goals got Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women past visiting Lees-McRae 2-1 in soccer on Wednesday night.

Hannah Van Eerden scored her second goal of the season (unassisted) for a 1-0 lead at the 13:59 mark, and Abbie Brown scored her third of the year at the 34:33 mark on an assist by Christina Shimshock to put the Bears ahead 2-0.

Lees-McRae (1-5-2) scored at the 70:45 mark when Riley Neese found the goalkeeper out of position and provided an unassisted goal.

The Bears (5-2-1) outshot Lees-McRae 28-3.

Alexis Feely made eight saves for Lees-McRae and the Bears’ Loren Sterling had two.

LRU’s next match is Saturday at 5 p.m., a South Atlantic Conference battle in Charlotte against Queens.
