HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men scored their only goal less than three minutes in on Wednesday night, but ended up tying visiting Lees-McRae 1-1 after two overtimes.
Junior Ignacio de Goya scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Bears just two minutes, 26 seconds in but the Bears (4-2-1) didn’t score again. Mark Fernandez has an assist on de Goya’s score.
The Bobcats tied it at 1 in the 34th minute on a scored by Pol Vassart, who finished off a pass from Nathan Watt.
That was all the scoring as Lees-McRae goalkeeper Tyler Pavlet and LRU’s Zach King allowed only one goal each over 110 minutes.
Pavlet posted four saves and King made eight saves.
Lees-McRae (5-2-2) outshot LRU 21-10.
LRU returns to South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., facing Queens in Charlotte.
