WALLACE – Sparked by sophomore Ainee O’Connor finishing second after a one-hole playoff, the Lenoir-Rhyne University women won the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic on Tuesday at River Landing Golf Club.
O’Connor forced a one-hole playoff in her second straight tournament and grabbed second place to Wingate’s Diana McDonald after both finished regulation at 7-over par 223.
The Bears finished a 54-over par 918 on a par-72, 5,812-yard course and finished 11 strokes better than second-place UNC Pembroke.
In Tuesday’s third and final round, LRU was aided by the play of junior All-American Abbey Hartsell. Hartsell, from Taylorsville, tied for sixth overall with a 229 (+13) but shot a 2-under 70 in the third round.
LRU’s next event is April 15-17 at the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championships at The Members Club at Woodcreek in Elgin, S.C.
