MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Ex-Bears pitcher Curtis closes out combined no-no

BRISTOL, Va. – Pitching for the Danville (Va.) Braves on Tuesday, former Hibriten High and Lenoir-Rhyne University left-hander John Curtis closed out a combined no-hitter against the Bristol (Va.) Pirates.

Curtis — drafted in the eighth round by the Atlanta Braves in this year’s draft — pitched one inning and struck out two to finish off the no-no. He followed starter Bruce Zimmerman and reliever Jacob Belinda in a 5-0 seven-inning victory in an Appalachian League rookie game.

It was the first game of a doubleheader against the Pirates, who won the second game 4-1.

In the opening game, Zimmerman worked two innings and walked one and struck out two. Belinda (4-0), who got a win, threw four innings (striking out four) before Curtis entered to throw the final inning.

It was the 10th game of the season for Curtis, who has a 0-0 record with the Braves with an ERA of 2.16 with one save. He’s pitched 16 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits, five runs (four earned) with seven walks and 20 strikeouts.

The game was completed in an hour, 45 minutes and, after losing the second game, Danville stands 25-21 while Bristol is now 10-37.
