MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: de Goya scores 3, Cascon has game-winner for Bears

SALISBURY – Sparked by three first-half goals from Iganacio de Goya, the Lenoir-Rhyne University men nipped Catawba 4-3 on Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) soccer.

The Bears won on the road when freshman Victor Cascon scored with a bit more than three minutes to play, improving to 6-2-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the league.

The hat trick by de Goya was the first by an LRU men’s player since Ismael Noumansana did it against Mars Hill in October 2016.

Zach King was in goal for the Bears and had four saves.

LRU outshot the Indians 15-11, getting eight shots on goal to Catawba’s seven.

Cason had a goal, his third of the season, and an assist for the Bears.

Philipp Hollenhorst scored twice for Catawba and Jack Ragen added the other goal.

Catawba fell to 1-8-1, 1-4-1 with the loss.

The Bears’ next match is Saturday at 7 p.m. at Francis Marion (S.C.).
