MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: de Goya leads Lenoir-Rhyne to shutout victory

HICKORY – Ignacio de Goya scored both goals on Wednesday night in a 2-0 soccer victory by the Lenoir-Rhyne University men over visiting Mars Hill.

de Goya, a junior, scored a goal in each half of a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match.

The Bears (5-2-2, 2-2-1) had 16 shots and the Lions (3-5-1, 2-2-1) had 6 as LRU improved to 4-0-1 at this season.

de Goya, who has a team-best six goals, gained his first on Wednesday night at the 39:40 mark on a penalty kick.

Senior Zach King was in goal for the Bears, posting his fifth shutout of the season and lowering his goals-against average to 0.52, second in the SAC.

Ben Lucas of Mars Hill made seven saves but the Lions had a two-match win streak halted.

LRU’s next match is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at home, a conference battle against Anderson (S.C.).
