COLLEGE SWIMMING: Both Lenoir-Rhyne teams win home openers

HICKORY – Both Lenoir-Rhyne University swimming teams won home openers on Saturday, the women downing Converse and Saint Andrews and the men beating Saint Andrews.

LRU won 164-92 over Converse and 223-15 over Saint Andrews in women’s meet at the Shuford Physical Education Center while the Bears beat Saint Andrews 194-40.

The Bears’ season continues on Nov. 3 at East Carolina

Freshman Kimberly Scheiber of Pleizenhausen, Germany, won three three individual events on Saturday and was on the winning 400 medley relay team for the LRU women. She won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.76), 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.33), and the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.80).

The 400 medley relay team (4:12.14) included sophomore Kiana Schumacher junior Jessica Myers and sophomore Lauren Rutherford.

Sophomores Elizabeth Bowman (200-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly and Kelsey Krumanocker (500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle) each won twice for the Bears.

LRU won the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle en route to a men’s victory on Saturday.

Freshman Jacob Greene, junior Jacob Queen, freshman Alex Ballard and sophomore Spencer Ashby won the 400-yard medley in 3:34.05.

Queen, Ashby, junior Dillon Carey and junior Seth Hurst finished the 400-yard freestyle in 3:16.06.

The Bears were led by Queen, Greene, and Ballard, as they each won two individual events:

Queen won the 100-yard (52.55) and 200-yard (1:53.02) backstrokes; Greene won the 500-yard (4:54.37) and 1000-yard (10:17.72) freestyles; and Ballard won the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.34) and 200-yard individual medley (2:00.15).
