COLLEGE SPORTS: Bears’ Lotharp wins Southeast Regional track and field award

Lenoir-Rhyne University junior sprinter P.J. Lotharp was named Monday as the Southeast Regional Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA).

Lotharp, from Indian Trail, is ranked third nationally in the 60-meters at 6.73 and 12th nationally in the 200 meters at 21.36. He won those two events and was a member of a record-breaking 1,600 relay team at the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championships.

The most recent regional award winner for LRU was Kate Griewisch in 2011 and 2012.

Lotharp is set to compete in the 60 and 200 at the 2019 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan., this weekend.

Bears’ Lazenby top tennis player

Lenoir-Rhyne University freshman Josh Lazenby has been named the SAC Tennis Player of The Week for Feb. 25 through March 3, league officials announced.

Lazenby, from Beverley, England, led the Bears to a 2-0 record last week, extending their winning streak to six matches. He was perfect in both singles and doubles play, defeating opponents from Limestone and Tiffin at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.
