HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University will have a new Sports Information Director after the resignation on Monday of John Karrs, who has handled those duties since 2002.

KARRS

Karrs, 41, was the seventh person hired by the school to handle media relations and other sports matters for the Bears’ athletic program.

Newton native Rick Strunk was the first SID at LRU and was later SID at Furman University before a long career at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Strunk retired last year.

LRU’s other SIDs were, in order: Joe Smith, Tom Neff, Dom Donnelly, Michael MacEachern and Chris Pluto.

Karrs said he has not specific career plans after 16 years at his alma mater. He graduated from LRU in 1999 and from St. Stephens High in 1995.

LRU athletic director Kim Pate informed the media of the staffing change in an email on Tuesday morning. She indicated Will Tyner is the school’s SID on an interim basis while the Bears conduct a national search for a permanent replacement.
