South Caldwell High, the state’s West 4A softball champion, won two of the three major awards in Northwestern 3A-4A softball for this season.

In a vote of league head coaches, pitcher Anna King of the Spartans won Pitcher of the Year and Casey Justice, a former star athlete at South Caldwell, was named Coach of the Year.

South Caldwell (29-3) won the West 4A title series and fell two games to one to Fayetteville Britt last weekend in a best-of-3 state championship series at N.C. State.

South Caldwell led the all-league picks with eight and Alexander Central (28-5), which won a state 3A title last weekend in Greensboro by sweeping Cleveland, had seven selections.

Mike, I would assume nominations would be taken annually from the public. As far as who is on the selection committee that would trim the field and make the selections, I wouldn’t know who they are. I imagine if they are like some of the ones I have been on at the state level through the years, they don’t make those names public. Sorry that I can’t be of more help. You bring back good memories of the old GFHS days. I actually have the game program from the final GFHS varsity football game. Thanks for writing to me.
