HUNTERSVILLE – Lake Norman Charter High announced Monday a change in varsity head basketball coaches.

In a press release from the school’s athletic department, the Knights said Chet Korczynski will coach the boys’ team next season and Mike Porter will coach the girls.

Korczynski coached Lake Norman Charter’s varsity girls last season after a seven-year stint before that as head coach of the junior varsity boys.

Porter was a varsity assistant with Korczynski and head junior varsity coach last season and also coached girls’ basketball, football and track and field at East Gaston before coming to Lake Norman Charter in 2017.

Korczynski previously coached the Knights in baseball for five years and worked on the football coaching staff for two seasons.

Lake Norman Charter’s girls went 8-14 last season, finishing 4-10 in the South Fork 2A and in seventh place. The Knights lost their last three games and seven of their last eight and did not reach the state 2A playoffs.

The Knights’ boys were 10-13, losing in the first round of the state 2A playoffs at Wheatmore after going 8-6 in the South Fork 2A to tie Newton-Conover for third place under head coach Aaron Reeves.

Reeves resigned after this eighth season (132-80 record).

Lake Norman Charter’s boys lost their final two games and went 2-5 over their final seven. They were seeded fourth in the South Fork 2A tournament and were eliminated in the first round by fifth-seeded Lincolnton.

Korczynski will be one of two new boys’ head coaches in the South Fork 2A, as Bandys will also have a new head coach (to be named) after it decided non-faculty head coach Adam Dutka would not return after four seasons.
