HUNTER HARVEY: Picks up second win of year as Nats edge Marlins

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A healthy Hunter Harvey is making a difference for the Washington Nationals in his first season with the club.

Harvey got into his 31st game on Saturday, earning a win when the Nats nipped the visiting Florida Marlins 5-3 before 34,179.

A former pitching star at Bandys High, Harvey threw one inning against the Marlins. He did not give up a hit or run and had one strikeout.

He came in with the scored tied at 3 and Washington scored a run in the next inning and the pitchers who entered after Harvey helped him get win No. 2 with Washington and his third big league victory.

Harvey threw strikes on six of his eight pitches to three batters and is now 2-1 this season with an ERA of 3.16 and 36 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings pitched.

After 57 major league appearances, Harvey is 3-3 with an ERA of 3.27 and 59 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched. He has  battled injuries for the previous three seasons, ending up in Washington after Baltimore and San Francisco placed him on waivers.

The Nats (51-94) play the Marlins in D.C. on Sunday then head out to Atlanta for a three-game series with the Braves — night games (7:20 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday) and a day game (12:20 p.m.) on Wednesday.

Washington is off on Thursday before a three-game set at the Marlins and they play the Braves in D.C. on Sept. 26-28.
