ST. LOUIS — Alec Burleson was not in the lineup on Friday night for the St. Louis Cardinals but got into his fifth big league game on Thursday night.

The Cincinnati Reds nipped the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Thursday, 3-2, when Burleson batted seventh in the order and went 0-for-3.

A former star at East Lincoln High and East Carolina, Burleson is hitting .133 (2-for-15) as the series with the Reds continues through the weekend.

Burleson is seeing a part of baseball history — perhaps the last player to reach 700 career home runs — as he plays in a lineup with Albert Pujols.

Pujols hit career home run No. 698 on Friday night in the Cardinals’ 6-5 victory over Cincinnati.

Burleson, an outfielder, was called up from Triple A Memphis (Tenn.) last week.
