NEWTON – Wrestling in their own gym, Fred T. Foard High’s Tigers kept on cruising Saturday by winning the Northwestern Foothills 2A tournament title, their fifth consecutive conference tournament victory.
After winning four straight league tournaments in 3A, Foard won another in its first season in its new 2A conference by scoring 275.5 points to easily outdistance second-place Bunker Hill.
Foard had seven weight class champions, and the Tigers’ head coach, Mike Carey, was named Northwestern Foothills 2A Coach of the Year.
The Tigers and Bunker Hill will advance to the state dual-team tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
Official pairings won’t be released by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) until Monday, but the brackets are pre-determined by conference finish.
On Tuesday night, at times to be determined, Bunker Hill (Northwestern Foothills 2A No. 2) will visit West Lincoln (South Fork 2A No. 1) while Newton-Conover (South Fork 2A No. 2) travels to face Fred T. Foard (Northwestern Foothills 2A No. 1).
