MAIDEN – The same 1-2 battle that defined the South Fork 2A’s first regular season in wrestling repeated itself on Saturday in the conference tournament at Maiden.

Regular-season champion West Lincoln won the tournament, scoring 234 ½ points, in a virtual head-to-head battle with Newton-Conover. The Red Devils, who has 197 ½ points on Saturday, finished second in the regular season.

The Rebels ended up with all 14 of their wrestlers finishing in the top four (the Red Devils had 12) and the traditional foes went head-to-head in five weight class championships.

On a day when 11 top-seeded wrestlers won titles, West Lincoln head coach Butch Ross was named the South Fork 2A Coach of the Year.

Spencer Harris of Newton-Conover, who won a title at 120 pounds, was named the league’s wrestler of the year.

The tournament featured a No. 4 seed winning a title at 113 pounds, as Cameron Smith of Lincolnton provided one of the two individual titles the Wolves won.

As the South Fork 2A’s No. 1 seed into the dual-team playoffs that begin on Tuesday, West Lincoln will be at home for a first-round match against Northwestern Foothills 2A No. 2 Bunker Hill (time to be announced).

Newton-Conover is the South Fork 2A’s No. 2 team for the dual-team bracket and opens Tuesday, at a time to be announced, at Northwestern Foothills 2A champion Fred T. Foard.
