Four of the seven girls’ tennis teams from the South Fork 2A, Northwestern Foothills 2A and Northwestern 3A-4A will open the state dual-team playoffs on Wednesday with home matches.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) released state tournament pairings on Monday, setting the stage for five rounds that will determine state champions in 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A on Nov. 3.
Maiden and East Lincoln advanced from the South Fork 2A, Fred T. Foard and East Burke got in from the Northwestern Foothills 2A, Hickory and Watauga earned 3A bids from the Northwestern 3A-4A and South Caldwell earned the 4A bid from the Northwestern 3A-4A.
The playoffs begin with 4 p.m. matches on Wednesday.
East Lincoln and East Burke travel for their playoff openers, the Mustangs going to Hendersonville and the Cavs going to Black Mountain Owen in 2A.
South Point (9-3) visits Maiden (14-3, South Fork 2A champion) and Canton Pisgah (12-4) goes to Foard (14-3, Northwestern Foothills 2A champion) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
In 3A, Northwestern 3A-4A champion Hickory will be at home Wednesday at 4 p.m., facing Asheville (14-3) while Watauga travels to play Asheville Roberson.
South Caldwell will be at home Wednesday afternoon, battling wild-card entry Lake Norman.
The second round is Oct. 23 and Maiden and Foard would meet if they both win Wednesday, as would East Burke and East Lincoln if both win.
Southern Alamance and Charlotte Catholic are in the bracket opposite Hickory in 3A, and Watauga would play Kings Mountain or Marvin Ridge if it knocks off undefeated Asheville Roberson (18-0).
A first-round win by South Caldwell would get the Spartans a match against Ardrey Kell or Independence in the second round.
