SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: Smith, McPherson combine for 1-hitter as Hickory wins baseball opener

HICKORY – Zach Smith and Zane McPherson combined on a 1-hitter on Monday, leading Hickory High to a 14-1 home endowment baseball game victory over Statesville to open the season.

Bryce Stober, William Stewart, Brody Scarborough, Grayson Lineberger and Blake Kiser each had two hits for the Red Tornadoes.

The victory opened the 29th season as head coach at Hickory for David Craft and his 31st season overall.

A former star catcher at his prep alma mater and later at Wingate, Craft guided the Red Tornadoes to a 12-11 record last season.

Craft’s teams at HHS are 443-273. He also coached at West Iredell and has a career record of 463-292.

The Red Tornadoes have three additional games this week – at Newton-Conover on Wednesday (4:30 p.m.), at home against North Lincoln on Friday (5:30 p.m.), and a home game on Saturday at noon against Fred T. Foard.
