HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: Black fans 12 as Spartans blank Panthers

Trent Black and a reliever combined on a a one-hitter — with Black striking out 12 — to lead South Caldwell High past visiting Hibriten 4-0 on Friday night in baseball in Hudson.

Jack Stevens had the only hit for the Panthers, and the Spartans made their five hits enough in support of Black and reliever Daniel Dye to win.

Austin Raynor and Curtis Massagee each doubled and drove in a run for South Caldwell while Austin Blevins added two RBIs.

South Caldwell scored all of its runs in the fifth inning.

Black went six innings, walking one, and Dye pitched the final inning after Black threw 76 pitches (55 for strikes) and fanned 12 (three called, nine swinging).

Houston Lawing went 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) with two walks and three strikeouts and took the loss for Hibriten.

South Caldwell is at home Saturday at 2:30 p.m. to play Draughn, while Hibriten has a noon game on Saturday at West Caldwell.

Bandys 4, Bunker Hill 2

Senior right-hander T.J. Rasar didn’t allow a hit for 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight, and the Trojans then used two relievers to gain a road win that ended the Bears’ seven-game win streak in the series.

Seniors Laz Maxwell and Elijah Carr pitched in relief for Bandys (2-0), with Carr striking out Casey Knighton with the bases loaded in the sixth inning after the Bears closed within two runs.

The Trojans had four hits – one each by Ivan Huffman, Andrew Patrick, Mac Beam and Cy Spencer – and the Bears’ three hits were by Eli Moser, Garrett Poovey and Dylan Roberts.

Bandys scored all of its runs in the second inning with the help of five walks.

Bunker Hill made three errors and Bandys made none.

The Trojans hadn’t beaten the Bears since mid-April of 2014, losing twice to the Bears in 2015 and 2016 and three times to them in 2017 (2-0, 4-2, 5-4).

Tuesday’s game was the first varsity baseball game between the two schools with them not in the same conference (they were together in the same league(s) from 1959 through last season).

Bandys opens its South Fork 2A schedule at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Maiden, and Bunker Hill starts Northwestern Foothills 2A play at Draughn at 7 p.m.

North Lincoln 7, Hickory 2

North Lincoln’s Tyler McPeak doubled four times, leading the Knights’ victory at Hickory.

McPeak had a two-run double in the first inning to get North Lincoln ahead before Jacob Fuller’s two-run single in the bottom of the first tied it 2-all.

A single by Brady Heavner drove in a run in the second to give the Knights a one-run led that they stretched to 5-2 in the third inning when they scored two runs with the aid of an infield error by the Red Tornadoes.

Peak’s third double, in the fifth inning, helped North Lincoln open its lead to five runs.

North Lincoln is at home Tuesday at 7 p.m. to face West Lincoln in a South Fork 2A opener.

Hickory goes to Statesville for a non-conference game on Monday.

SOFTBALL

Maiden 7, Fred T. Foard 4

The Blue Devils scored all of their runs in the third inning at Fred T. Foard to win as Shayla Thompson delivered three hits, two stolen bases and two RBIs.

Adding two hits each for Maiden were Kaitlyn Wray, Emma Lay and Jaiden Kiser, and Addy Ikard had a two-run single and Grace Herman singled in a run.

Morgan Boheimer gained a win, allowing four runs on six hits. She walked five and struck out three.

For Foard, Madison Rowe hit a home run and Abby Settlemyre had two hits and drove in two runs with Addison Yoder taking the loss.

Maiden’s next game is at 6 p.m. at home on Tuesday, a South Fork 2A opener against Bandys, and Foard is playing Saturday – along with Lincoln Charter – in South Caldwell’s Spartan Classic.

Foard’s first Northwestern Foothills 2A game is Tuesday against East Burke on the road at 6 p.m.

Bandys 8, North Iredell 3

The Trojans won on the road behind a 4-for-4 game by Ashtyn Hopson, three hits and an RBI by Samantha Browning and with Mackenzie Deal going 2-for-4 with a home run and driving in three runs.

Lydia Poovey was the winning pitcher, going five innings. She gave up seven hits, three runs (one earned), walked none and struck out seven.

Bandys led 5-1 early and scored three runs in the seventh inning after the Raiders’ two-run fifth pulled them within 5-3.

Zoe Dalton went 2-for-3 for North Iredell.

Bandys plays its South Fork 2A opener on Tuesday at Maiden at 6 p.m.

South Caldwell 7, Hibriten 4

At Hibriten, freshman Reagan Weisner went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to spark the Spartans’ victory.

Gracyln Greene, Cydney Combs and Ciara Hanson each had two hits for South Caldwell, and Combs and Hanson each scored twice.

Kyndell Warren had two hits for the Panthers.

Sophomore Anna King was the winning pitcher for the Spartans, who are at home Saturday for the Spartan Classic with Fred T. Foard and Lincoln Charter also playing.

Hibriten meets West Caldwell on Saturday at 2 p.m. at West Caldwell.

Newton-Conover 14, East Burke 9

Powered by a seven-running second inning, the Red Devils edged the host Cavs despite making five errors.

Maddie Carpenter had four of Newton-Conover’s 17 hits with Kali Flanagan, also the winning pitcher in relief, providing two hits and three RBIs. Destiny Ussery had three hits and drove in two runs and Kaylee Kanipe added three hits for the Red Devils.

East Burke had 14 hits, four by Graleigh Hildebran and two each by Ashlyn Stilwell, Kaitlyn Underwood and Rachel Hughes.

Flanagan pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run, after replacing Newton-Conover starter Destiny Vines (3.2 IP, eight runs, four earned).

Lexi Seagle, the Cavs’ starter, went four innings and took the loss. She gave up seven hits, seven runs (all earned), walked three and struck out three.

Newton-Conover opens South Fork 2A play on Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. home game with Lincolnton while East Burke starts its Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Fred T. Foard.

Draughn 11, St. Stephens 6

At St. Stephens, the Indians outhit the Wildcats 12-5 but Draughn prevailed.

Sophie Hainor and Katy Sherrill each had three hits for St. Stephens, which scored three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Payton Lyda.

St. Stephens’ Lauren Moser took the loss after allowing five hits and 11 runs over six innings. She struck out five.

The Indians open their Northwestern 3A-4A schedule on Tuesday at 6 p.m., playing at South Caldwell.

East Lincoln 6-2, North Gaston 4-0

The Mustangs swept a doubleheader on the road with freshman Katelynn Crowe leading the opening game victory by going 3-for-4 and scoring twice.

Faith Cooke went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs for the Mustangs in the opener with Payton Baker gaining the pitching win.

The second game, won 2-0 by East Lincoln, went five innings. Baker was the winning pitcher, giving up one hit, and Cooke went 2-for-2 with a double for the Mustangs.

Hannah Davis had a double among her two hits and Meredith Summey drove in a run for East Lincoln, which opens South Fork 2A play on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at home against Lake Norman Charter.

Cramer 8, Lincolnton 4

At Cramer, Leslie Hicks had two hits and drove in two runs and winning pitcher Carley Womack added two hits to lead Carmer.

Kyle Nelson added two hits for Cramer.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bandys 2, Bunker Hill 1

The Trojans won on the road as Katie Cornette and Alicia Buckminster each scored a goal.

Vilma Rivas and Abbey Spiva played in goal for Bandys.

The Trojans play a non-league match Monday at 5 p.m. at Alexander Central, while the Bears meet Alexander Central on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bunker Hill.

Asheville 2, Hickory 0

Evan Hart scored both goals for the Cougars as nipped the visiting Red Tornadoes.

Hickory is at home Monday at 6 p.m., facing Statesville.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. Stephens 19, Davie County 7

Dylan McFarland and Nick Yapundich each scored five goals and Matt Hainor had four, leading the Indians to a home victory over the War Eagles.

Zach Lee added three goals for St. Stephens (1-1).

Hainor provided four assists and McFarland had two, and Christian Impagliazzo made five saves for St. Stephens.

The Indians’ next match is Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Davie County.

Lake Norman Charter 19, Independence 4

The Knights (2-0) won behind six goals by Luke Mostert, four by Micah Stechmiller and with Kyle Shepler debuting in goal by making seven saves.

Lake Norman Charter plays Monday against Queens Grant.
