HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER: Vikes, Mustangs battle for title as E. Lincoln honors ‘Duck’

South Iredell and host East Lincoln will meet on Saturday night in a title game of the Andy Kosmala and Miranda Eckard Memorial high school boys’ soccer tournament, where the Mustangs also plan to honor one of their own.

SATURDAY
E. Rutherford vs. Cramer,, 5 p.m.
S. Iredell vs. E. Lincoln, 7 p.m.

South Iredell beat Stuart Cramer 6-0 on Friday night, and East Lincoln then nipped East Rutherford 4-0 to set up Saturday’s action.

Cramer and East Rutherford play at 5 p.m., and the Mustangs play the Vikings for the title at 7 p.m. Between those matches, East Lincoln will honor Danny (Duck) Duckworth and his family.

Duckworth has been involved with Mustangs athletics for more than 30 years, serving as an assistant baseball coach, mowing all of the school’s athletic fields, fixing and maintaining equipment used in athletics and also playing other roles for the athletic department.

A graduate of Rock Springs High, Duckworth has also spent more than 20 years coaching and keeping up the playing fields through the East Lincoln Optimist Club, where he is a lifetime member, and he is a lifetime member of East Lincoln’s Boosters Club.

Duckworth is facing a health challenge, having started treatment for cancer last October. He has a rare form of leukemia, and he recently received news that his blood counts are in line with what they need to be for him to move toward surgery as part of his treatment, East Lincoln athletic officials said in a press release about the tournament.

This weekend’s tournament is named after Kosmala, who died after battling brain cancer, and Eckard, who also lost a battle with cancer, and its proceeds through the years have also sponsored treatments for six other community members.

South Iredell 6, Cramer 0

Erin Shaver and Sarah Addis each scored twice as the Vikings shut out Cramer.

Julia Knapp had a goal and an assist, Mariah Hill scored once and Lindsay Durham, Claire Laporte and Emily McLeod added assists for South Iredell.

East Lincoln 4, East Rutherford 0

Taylor Barrineau scored twice and had an assist, leading the Mustangs past the Cavs.

Sierra Gilley and Ally Schwab each scored a goal for East Lincoln. Gilley added two assists and Mattie Schwab had an assist.
