HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Foard pounds Freedom in softball for 7th straight victory

Fred T. Foard High ran its win streak to seven games in softball on Thursday, pounding visiting Freedom 15-1 in a non-conference game.

The Tigers got three RBIs each from Emily Campbell and Morgan Lofton and they each had two hits while Adison Yoder went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs for the Tigers.

Morgan Smith allowed four hits and struck out three and got a win for Foard (7-1), whose only loss was in a season-opening game against Maiden.

Foard is leading the early Northwestern Foothills 3A standings at 3-0 and has three home games next week – Tuesday at home against Hibritent and non-league games Wednesday and Friday against West Lincoln and Cannon McMillian next Friday.

Freedom plays Alexander Central in a home Northwestern 3A-4A game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Maiden 6, Lake Norman Charter 5

Addyson Ikard had two hits – one a double – and drove in three runs and Lashayla Thompson had a double among her two hits as the Blue Devils won a South Fork 2A game at home.

Morgan Boheimier pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking two and allowing one run and two hits to gain a win for Maiden.

Khristen McPherson took the loss for Lake North Charter.

Maiden had eight hits and made three errors and the Knights had six hits and made two errors.

Maiden continues league play on Friday against North Lincoln. The game, originally scheduled at North Lincoln, will be played at Maiden at 6 p.m. due to lighting issues at North Lincoln.

Lake Norman Charter’s conference home game Friday against Newton-Conover begins at 5:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Lake Norman Charter 14, Maiden 8

The visiting Knights had an early seven-run lead that Maiden erased by the fifth inning before Lake Norman Charter scored the game’s final eight runs to win a South Fork 2A game.

After Maiden scored in the first inning to lead 1-0, the Knights scored eight runs in the second inning.

The Blue Devils (0-5, 0-3) had a four-run third inning, closing within 8-5, and Maiden tied it 8-all by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Max Doherty, hitting third in the Knights lineup, went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Michael Ashford, batting sixth, also was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Logan Ansted threw five innings, giving up nine hits, eight runs (six earned), walking three and striking out six to gain a win for Lake Norman Charter (3-2, 2-1).

Alex Lonergan allowed two hits over 1 2/3 innings and Nick Womack got the final out for the Knights, who share third place with Lincolnton and West Lincoln.

For Maiden, Dylan Abernathy, Grayeson Brown and Carlos Reynoso each had two hits and Reynoso drove in four runs.

Brown, Bryson Ledford and Jarrett Isaac also drove in a run each for the Blue Devils.

Ross Fowler threw 101 pitches, going five innings, and took the loss for Maiden. He gave up eight hits, eigh runs (five earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.

Maiden plays North Lincoln, which shares the league lead with Bandys, in a South Fork 2A game on Friday at 7 p.m. at Maiden (the schools traded home playing dates due to lighting issues at North Lincoln).

Lake Norman Charter faces Newton-Conover at 4 p.m. on Friday at Lake Norman Charter in a conference game.

Alexander Central 6, West Caldwell 1

Justin Cook went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs and threw a complete game, leading the Cougars to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory in Taylorsville.

Cook had half of Alexander Central’s six hits – with Josh Lafone adding two and Byron Younts one – and he limited the Warriors (1-5, 0-3) to four hits.

The Cougars scored four runs in the third inning and were ahead 4-1 when they added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Dawson Garrett, Carson Vance, Cody Baker and Nick Kidd had hits for West Caldwell, and Baker had an RBI.

West Caldwell starter Nick Kidd took the loss, going 3 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits, six runs (five earned), walked five and struck out one.

Cook walked one and struck out five.

Alexander Central (5-1, 2-1) is alone in third place in the conference standings and has a home league game Friday at 6 p.m. against Watauga while the Warriors play a conference game at 6:30 p.m. at South Caldwell.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hickory 5, Freedom 1

Ayden Vaughn and Lauren Hayes each scored twice to lead the Red Tornadoes to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory over visiting Freedom.

Amy Herfurth also scored for Hickory (5-2, 2-1) and Sarah Harding had three saves in goal.

Jayln McCoy had 14 saves in goals for the Patriots (3-2-1, 0-2), whose only goal came from Savannah McGriff.

Hickory faces Newton-Conover in a non-conference match at 5 p.m. Monday at Hickory while Freedom’s next match is Tuesday at the Catawba River Soccer Complex (6 p.m.), a league battle with Alexander Central.

Alexander Central 4, East Burke 0

Marrisa Brown’s two goals kept the Cougars, playing at home, unbeaten (4-0). She also had an assist.

Madison Thomas and Alyssa Matthews each added a goal for Alexander Central.

Sierra Jowers had a save for the Cougars, who have a home match on Friday against Watauga at 6 p.m.

East Burke meets West Iredell on the road at 6 p.m. Friday in a Northwestern Foothills 2A match.

Lake Norman Charter 5, North Lincoln 0

Sophomore Ayden Yates scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season, sparking Lake Norman Charter past visiting North Lincoln in a South Fork 2A match.

Lake Norman Charter took 33 shots, with senior captains Alex Behnke and Olivia Masterton and Hallie Arko also scoring goals

A backline of Masterton, Maddie Sims and Carsyn Yates led Lake Norman Charter defensively and Delaney Pierce made two saves.

Yates added two assists and Yates and Shannon Lunny each had one for Lake Norman Charter.

Morgan McPeak had eight saves in goal for North Lincoln.

Lake Norman Charter plays at Maiden on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a conference match while North Lincoln meets East Gaston in a non-league match Friday at 5 p.m. at North Lincoln.

Newton-Conover 3, Bandys 0

At Bandys, Jessica Tenjhay and Anna Grace Hilton had goals and Zoe Nester was in goal for a shutout as the Red Devils edged the Trojans in a South Fork 2A match.

Newton-Conover has a non-league match Monday at 5 p.m. at Hickory, and the Trojans go to Lincolnton for a conference match on Tuesday.
