RALEIGH — With numbers improving in the battle with COVID-19, Gov. Roy Cooper relaxed some of the requirements of how many fans can attend indoor and outdoor events, including high school football.

The new executive order begins at 5 p.m. on Friday. Until then, the current limits — 25 fans in prep basketball and 100 in prep football, all of them from the home team — remain in place.

The games moved up from Friday to Thursday will be under the 25 and 100 limits.

Third-round state playoff basketball games are scheduled Saturday, when the order’s new limit will be in place. It calls for no more than 250 fans attending.

The new limits for prep football should kick in with next week’s games — it is 30 percent of a stadium’s capacity and schools will have to calculate that and enforce the total(s). Fans from both the home and visiting teams should be able to attend.
