LINCOLNTON – Forcing four turnovers, defending state 3A champion South Point cranked up a 59-6 victory over host Lincolnton Friday night, sending the Wolves to a 0-2 start.

Jake Alexander ran 17 times for 145 yards and scored five touchdowns, The Lincoln Times News reported, and overwhelmed Lincolnton.

The Wolves fell 40-7 in last week’s opening game at Cramer.

South Point (2-0) came in after a 22-14 season-opening win over Crest last week and wasted little time jumping on the Wolves.

The Red Raiders had a long punt return set up Alexander’s first TD, then added another TD run by Alexander and a passing TD for 21-0 lead before the first quarter had ended.

Lincolnton’s biggest play of the night was an 82-yard pass for a score from Terrell McClain to Tyreke Hollis (six catches for 124 yards, The Times News reported).

Lincolnton continues to play Gaston County teams the next two weeks, facing North Gaston in Lincolnton Friday at 7:30 p.m. and going to East Gaston the next week.

After an open date on Sept. 15, the Wolves open South Fork 2A play when they travel to league favorite Newton-Conover.
