HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Alexander Central clips Eagles, off to 2-0 start

NORTH WILKESBORO – Tevin Clark and Gunnar Anderson each scored twice on Friday night as Alexander Central High continued to manhandle Wilkes Central in football.

Clark had scoring runs of 6 and 4 yards in the opening quarter and Anderson ran 8 and 2 yards for second-quarter scores in a 28-6 win by the Cougars (2-0).

Alexander Central extended its winning streak in the series to eight straight at Wilkes Central, 15 in the series and wins in 22 of the last 26 matchups.

Clark had 18 carries for 84 yards to lead Alexander Central’s offense, which outgained the Eagles 369-313.

Anderson completed eight of 11 passes for 187 yards and Kendall Flowers caught three passes for 116 yards for the Cougars.

Tyler Boles ran 21 times for 115 yards and Jasiah Ferguson completed 10 of 16 passes for 119 yards for Wilkes Central.

Tray Lackey and Lyndon Strickland led the Cougars defense, each with seven tackles, and Steve Montgomery had six.

Alexander Central overcame 13 penalties for 104 yards to win for the ninth time in 14 games under head coach Butch Carter, who is in his second year as the Cougars’ head coach.

Clark’s first-quarter TD runs came about 6 ½ minutes apart and Alexander Central led 14-0 after one quarter.

JoRaye Morrison’s 41-yard TD run with 10 minutes, 43 seconds left in the first half got the Eagles within 14-6.

About three minutes later, Anderson ran 9 yards for a TD and hit Flowers on a two-point conversion to make it 22-6.

Anderson’s 2-yard TD run with 2:05 left before the half made it 28-6.

Alexander Central plays at North Iredell on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and at home on Sept. 8 against North Lincoln. After an open date on Sept 15, the Cougars start Northwestern 3A-4A play at West Caldwell.
