He confirmed to HobbsDailyReport.com he is among three finalists for the open position at Union County, a 3A school that plays in Region II with Clinton, Emerald, Mid-Carolina, Newberry and Woodruff.

Union County went 2-10 last season and 9-5 the season before that.

While McManus has been offensive coordinator at South Pointe, a 4A school in Rock Hill, S.C., the Stallions have been 56-5 and won four straight state championships. They were 15-0 last season, scoring 711 points.

McManus is a 1996 graduate of Newton-Conover, where he played football and baseball before playing college football at Gardner-Webb University as punter.

He played varsity football for the Red Devils in 1994 (9-3) and 1995 (12-1) under head coach Don Patrick.

As a junior, McManus kicked 36 extra points and his punting average was 31.9 yards. He followed that with 32 PATs as a senior, a punting average of 33.4 yards and kicked three field goals – 39 yards against Bessemer City, 42 yards against St. Stephens and 31 yards against Maiden.

After college, he began his coaching career as a student assistant at Gardner-Webb for one season. He spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Middle Tennessee while working on his master’s degree.

McManus was defensive coordinator for one year at the University of the South, then coached defensive backs and was special teams coordinator for two seasons at Tusculum.

After spending four seasons as wide receiver-running backs coach at Chattanooga, he spent a year at Troy University as offense control coordinator.

McManus then moved to the high school ranks as offensive coordinator for one year at York (S.C.) and came to South Pointe after two seasons as offensive coordinator at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Miss.

Next season will be McManus’ 20th in coaching.
