HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mayfield-led Maiden crushes Fred T. Foard

NEWTON – Keygan Mayfield made his return to the Maiden High football lineup a big one on Friday night.

Mayfield, who played for the Blue Devils as a sophomore and then played last season at Davidson Day, had 290 yards of total offense as visiting Maiden pounded Fred T. Foard 37-14 in the first game of the season for both teams.

Mayfield ran 27 times for 186 yards and threw for 104 yards. He ran for two scores and threw for two more as the Blue Devils ran their win streak over the Tigers to six.

Maiden has won its last 15 games at Foard, last falling there in 1985.

On Friday night, Caleb McDaniel caught nine passes – two for TDs – to help Maiden win. He

opened the scoring with an 8-yard run and the Blue Devils led 7-0 early.

Foard pulled within a point after a 5-yard TD run by quarterback Jack Colisimo. But when Mayfield broke a run 58 yards for a score, Maiden was back ahead 14-6.

In the second quarter, McDaniel caught a 17-yard pass from Mayfield to stretch the Blue Devils’ lead to 21-6.

Foard closed within 21-14 when Gavin Shoemaker scored on a 30-yard run and Christian Mejia added a two-point conversion run.

Maiden did the rest of the game’s scoring, going up by two TDs when Mayfield scored on a 22-yard run and the Blue Devils led 35-14 after Mayfield threw 14 yards to McDaniel for another score in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils registered a fourth-quarter safety to open a 23-point lead.

Maiden outgained Foard 486 yards to 217, and the Blue Devils’ offense made plays when they were need. Maiden converted 9-of-13 third downs and went for it on fourth down and succeeded twice in four attempts.

The Blue Devils’ defense forced five turnovers (three lost fumbles, two interceptions).

Maiden plays its home opener on Friday at 7:30 p.m., facing East Burke. Foard travels to Bandys for a 7:30 p.m. start.
