PILOT MOUNTAIN – Trent Lowman, head football coach at East Surry High and a Catawba County native, has been recognized as the South’s top coach.

East Surry officials announced Tuesday they’ve been informed by letter that Lowman is the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) football coach of the year in the South Section.

The region includes North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Lowman was earlier named the NFHS’ state football coach of the year, which put him in the running for both a regional award and for the top national award.

He’s been at East Surry for two seasons and was head coach at his alma mater, Bandys, for five seasons after taking over that program when his dad (Randy) retired.
