JUNIOR VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS

ALEXANDER CENTRAL 8, HIBRITEN 0

Cam Lackey had the game’s only score and ran 17 times for 117 yards as Alexander Central High opened the junior varsity football season by beating Hibriten 8-0 in Taylorsville.

Lackey scored on a 12-yard run with five minutes, 44 seconds left in the third quarter and added a two-point conversion run.

The game was a defensive battle that included seven lost fumbles (Cougars 4, Panthers 3), and Alexander Central limited Hibriten to 54 yards rushing on 31 carries.

Dalton Beck led the Cougars, who had seven tackles for lost yardage, with eight tackles while Preston Hudson added two sacks and six tackles and Zaheim Millsaps recovered two fumbles.

For Hibriten, Sadbarri Moore had seven tackles, three of them for lost yardage and Dace Tugman provide six tackles and Nathan Wood had 2 ½ hits for lost yardage.

Hibriten converted only one of seven third down plays and none of its three fourth down tries, and the Cougars were 0-for-7 on third downs and converted two of their four attempts on fourth down.

Alexander Central (1-0) is at home Thursday night against Wilkes Central while Hibriten is idle until playing Ashe county in Lenoir on Sept. 5.

MAIDEN 36, FRED T. FOARD 0

Brenden Harrison ran and threw for scores and had two interceptions on defense, leading the Blue Devils’ home victory to open the season.

Harrison opened the scoring with a 25-yard run and threw a two-point conversion pass to Bryson Foard for an early 8-0 lead.

Maiden led 22-0 after it tacked on a 12-yard TD run by Jacob Sigmon and Korbyn Lawing’s 5-yard scoring run and a two-point run by Harrison.

Harrison threw 40 yards to Sigmon for another TD and Lawing ran for a two-point conversion to make it 30-0.

Maiden’s final score came on a 5-yard run by Foard.

Chase Jenkins had an interception and Jackson Hensley recovered a fumble to spark the Maiden defense.

The Blue Devils (1-0) play Thursday night at South Caldwell and the Tigers (0-1) are at home Thursday night against Bandys.

NEWTON-CONOVER 31, BUNKER HILL 16

The Red Devils opened their season with a road victory.

Preston Workman (3-yard run) and Brady Speaks (2-yard run) scored for the Bears and Elijah Israel ran for two two-point conversions.

Newton-Conover (1-0) is idle until facing Hickory on Sept. 5 in Newton.

Bunker Hill (0-1) will play at St. Stephens on Thursday night.
