HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) will open its volleyball season on Tuesday night, facing Southwest Virginia Community College at 6:30 p.m. in the Tarlton Complex.

The Red Hawks will travel to Perrysburg, Ohio to play in the Owens Express Invitational and won’t have another home match until playing host to the Region X-travaganza on Sept. 20-21.

CVCC’s players have selected three captains: setter Macy Pope (West Iredell High), libero Bre Myers (North Buncombe) and outside hitter Meredith Patterson (North Iredell).

There are three players from area high school leagues on the Red Hawks’ roster – Pope, middle hitter Sage Harrington (Alexander Central) and middle hitter Emma Clark (Watauga).

CVCC will start the year already ranked – No. 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll – and the Red Hawks are coming off a 36-win season that included three wins in the national tournament.

Shannon Hudson returns for her 11th season as head coach. She feels last year’s success will have an impact.

“I think it gives the girls confidence coming into the season,” she said in a CVCC press release. “Last year, we had 16 freshmen. They were unsure of themselves and unsure of what they could accomplish together.

“It was probably mid-season last year before they realized ‘Hey, we’re pretty good at this game and if we work together, we can be really successful.’

“We don’t have that obstacle to overcome this year. They know what they can accomplish. The sophomores are amazing leaders. They are bringing that confidence to practice.

“It definitely shows on the court. That’s definitely a nice thing.”

CVCC returns sophomore middle hitter Clark, who was a freshman first-team All-America pick. She is the reigning Region X Player of the Year.

Clark is one of two Division II players on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Players To Watch list.

The Red Hawks enter the season with a 126-match winning streak in Region X.

In a change, the Region X tournament champion will play host to the Region VII champion in the district tournament, and the winner reaches the national tournament.
