ICARD – West Caldwell High’s players didn’t get an opportunity to play directly under the instruction of their new head coach on Friday night but they pulled together and opened the season with a 35-0 victory over East Burke on the road.

New head coach Devore Holman has been away addressing some knee problems and associate head coach Neil Ramsey guided the Warriors as they scored a shutout against the Cavs and their new head coach, Mark Buffamoyer (a former head coach at West Caldwell).

Holman’s in his first season at West Caldwell, coming there from Davie County.

Coming off a 10-win season, the Warriors got three TDs from Elijah Brooks –of 24, 25 and 4 yards – and also contributions from other returnees from last year.

Taye Dula went 59 yards for a rushing TD that gave West Caldwell a 14-0 lead. After Brooks’ 25-yard scoring run, Jeremy Boyce broke a 28-yard run for a score and a 28-0 lead for the Warriors.

Boyce ran for 106.5 yards per game and 15 TDs last season when West Caldwell shared the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A title with Lincolnton.

West Caldwell and East Burke play their second games of the season on Friday at 7:30 p.m. with East Burke facing Maiden on the road and West Caldwell play at home against Hibriten.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify that Holman was not able to make his West Caldwell debut because of complications from a knee injury.
