Hickory High announced late Monday it is moving its varsity football battle with Statesville on the road from Friday night to Wednesday night.

The Red Tornadoes (6-3, 5-1) — winless in the spring and in their first season with Joe Glass as head coach — can gain a share of the Western Foothills 3A title by beating Statesville (8-0, 6-0).

North Lincoln (7-2, 5-1) shares second place with Hickory while East Lincoln (7-2, 4-2) is in fourth place. The Knights visit the Mustangs on Friday night at 7 p.m.

If Statesville and East Lincoln win, there will be a three-way tie for second place — Hickory, East Lincoln and North Lincoln.

Draughn varsity game moved up

Draughn’s varsity football game at Mountain Heritage, scheduled on Friday, has been moved up and will be played at 6 p.m. on Thursday night.

Three CVAC 2A JV games moved up

Because of a forecast for rain, all three Catawba Valley 2A Athletic JV games have been moved to Wednesday night.

Bandys (4-2, 3-2) will visit Bunker Hill (5-2, 2-2), West Caldwell (0-6, 0-4) will go to East Burke (2-5, 1-4). Both games kick off at 7 p.m., and Maiden (4-3, 2-1) will visit Newton-Conover (4-2, 3-2).

Freedom cancels final JV game

Freedom announced it needs its junior varsity players on the varsity roster and won’t play Thursday’s home JV game against Alexander Central.

Freedom is 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the Northwestern 3A-4A.

Alexander Central (4-1, 3-0) announced on Tuesday a new opponent for this week. The Cougars will travel to Indian Land, S.C., for a 6 p.m. kick off on Wednesday.

The Cougars are in front of Watauga, 3-1 in the league, and Ashe County, 2-1 in the league.

Unless conference officials decide otherwise, Alexander Central would end up as the conference champion (based on winning percentage in league games).

Key JV battle in Western Foothills 3A moved up

The showdown between East Lincoln (7-1, 4-0) and North Lincoln (7-0, 4-0)  in JV football, originally set for Thursday night at North Lincoln, will be played Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

The game winner wins the conference title.
