GAME DATES CHANGED: East Burke’s varsity will play at Freedom on Thursday night this week and the JV game, at East Burke, has been moved to Wednesday night.

MORGANTON – The annual Fat Friday high school football game pitting Burke County rivals East Burke and Freedom head-to-head will actually be played on Thursday night this season.

In an email early Tuesday saying potential bad weather is expected on Friday, Freedom athletic director Casey Rogers said the varsity game will now be played Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Freedom.

The junior varsity game, at East Burke, was originally scheduled for Thursday and will now be played in Icard on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

East Burke’s varsity is 0-2 after losses to West Caldwell and Maiden, and the Freedom varsity is 1-1 after a loss to Shelby and a victory over Draughn.

The East Burke JVs are 0-1 with a loss to Maiden, and the Patriots’ JVs are 1-0 after defeating Draughn.

Watauga JVs have new opponent

Watauga has announced it will be at home Thursday night for a JV football game at 6:30 p.m. against Elizabethon, Tenn. instead of playing Avery County in Boone.

Avery County is not fielding a JV team this season.

The Pioneers are 1-0 after beating Ashe County 34-20 in their season-opener last Thursday in Boone.

Update

Lincolnton’s JVs beat South Point on the road last Thursday to open the season… McDowell was scheduled to play Avery County but did not play, as Avery County is not fielding a JV team this season.
