GOLDEN HELMET WINNERS 2017
Week 1: Keygan Mayfield, QB, Maiden
Week 2: Ian Walker, DE, St. Stephens

NEWTON – Ian Walker, a junior defensive end who played a key role as St. Stephens High forced seven turnovers in a 35-7 victory over Bunker Hill last Friday night, is this week’s WNNC Oldies 101.3 FM Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award winner.

Walker had six tackles – including three for lost yardage – and added two sacks, two forced fumbles and returned two fumbles for scores as the Indians evened their record at 1-1. His fumble returns were for more than 100 total yards.

“I’ve never seen it before in 31 years of coaching,” St. Stephens head coach Wayne Hicks said of Walker’s fumble return TDs.

The Indians have an open date this Friday and return to action on Sept. 8 with a non-conference game at Maiden.

Walker is this season’s second winner of the Golden Helmet Award, following Maiden quarterback Keygan Mayfield as the Week No. 1 winner.

The award, in its 36th year, is presented each week after area head football coaches nominate players for consideration.
