ICARD – The Cavs made their first win under head coach Mark Buffamoyer an exciting one on Friday night.

Quarterback Grant Fulbright scored on a 6-yard run in overtime, and the Cavs’ defense then held as East Burke nipped visiting West Lincoln 32-26 in overtime.

Off to an 0-4 start against teams that are a combined 13-3 (West Caldwell, Maiden, Freedom and Newton-Conover), the Cavs forced overtime after Chase Childers returned an interception for a TD with about 7 ½ minutes to go.

East Burke got West Lincoln (2-2) down by eight points after scores by Josh Moore and Fulbright’s scoring pass to Ayden Lail.

The Rebels surged and it took a TD run by Brent Childers for the Cavs to pull even at 20 with about seven minutes to play in the third quarter.

The game was the first in football between the Cavs and the Rebels.

East Burke is idle this week and then plays West Iredell on Sept. 22 in Icard (7:30 p.m.) in a Northwestern Foothills 2A game.

West Lincoln opens its South Fork 2A schedule next Friday at home, playing North Lincoln at 7:30 p.m.
