HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Campbell-led Draughn picks up first win of year

VALDESE – Christian Campbell scored four touchdowns on Friday night to spark Draughn High’s first football win of the season.

After opening an early two-touchdown lead, the Wildcats beat visiting Avery County 42-20 to improve to 1-4.

Campbell ran for Draughn’s first two scores and gave the Wildcats a 14-0 lead late in the opening quarter.

After Avery County (1-3) scored on a pass and a run, it was tied at 14.

Tyler McKinney’s 80-yard TD run just before halftime gave Draughn a 21-14 lead.

McKinney extended the Wildcats’ lead with a rushing TD, and Avery County scored to get within 28-20 before Draughn surged again.

Campbell, who came into the game with 237 rushing yards and three TDs, added scoring runs of 7 and 3 yards for the Wildcats.

Avery County and Draughn were playing football for the first time.

Avery County hasn’t won since beating Ashe County in its opener and has been outscored 151-126.

Draughn plays its first Northwestern Foothills 2A game next Friday at 7:30 p.m., facing West Iredell on the road.
