NEWTON — Chance Benfield of St. Stephens High on Tuesday won the Oldies 101.3 FM/WNNC Coca-Cola Golden Helmet award for the second week of the high school football season.
Benfield, a senior linebacker, had seven first hits, one assist, three tackles for lost yardage, a sack, two fumble recoveries and scored two defensive touchdowns last Friday night as the Indians defeated visiting Bunker Hill 44-6.
Benfield returned a fumble for the game’s first score, going 46 yards for a TD less than four minutes into the game. He recovered a block punt in the end zone in the closing seconds of the first quarter as St. Stephens (1-1) built its lead to 20-6.
With those two TDs and an interception return for a TD last season against South Caldwell, Benfield is the only Indians player in the last 35 years with more than two defensive scores in a career, research by HobbsDailyReport.com shows.
