HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Maiden opens league volleyball with win at Bandys

Sarah Wicker and Abbey Smith combined for 23 kills on Tuesday night, leading visiting Maiden High to a 3-1 win at Bandys to open the South Fork 2A volleyball schedule for both schools.

The Blue Devils won 25-16 and 25-5 before the Trojans won 25-15 to force a fourth set that Maiden won 25-17.

Wicker had 13 kills and four blocks and Smith added 10 kills as Maiden — second last season in the conference to East Lincoln – won its league opener again over the Trojans (3-0 Maiden last season at Maiden).

Faith Herman had 40 assists, and Lauren Xayavong added 28 digs and Peyton McRee had 10 for the Blue Devils.

Maiden finished 12-2 in the conference last year, a game behind East Lincoln, and the Blue Devils’ only conference losses were at North Lincoln and at home against East Lincoln.

The Blue Devils have now won 10 consecutive conference matches as they prepare to play a non-conference match at home Wednesday at 6 p.m. against South Iredell.

Maiden plays at home Thursday at 6 pm. in a league match, facing West Lincoln.

Bandys, 8-6 last season in the South Fork 2A to finish in fourth place, travels to Newton-Conover on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a conference match. The Trojans swept their regular-season matches last season against the Red Devils.

East Lincoln 3, Lake Norman Charter 0

The Mustangs opened defense of their South Fork 2A title with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 home victory over the previously unbeaten Knights (4-1, 0-1).

Liberty Harris led Lake Norman Charter with 24 digs and nine kills while Taylor Adelman provided 19 digs and five kills, Pearce Augier had five kills and four blocks and libero Hope Curtis posted 30 digs.

The Mustangs swept the Knights last season, winning 3-0 both times, and Lake Norman Charter finished 4-10 in the conference and in sixth place.

East Lincoln goes to Lincolnton on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a league match while Lake Norman Charter plays a non-league match Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Charlotte Country Day and a South Fork 2A match on Thursday at 6 p.m. at North Lincoln.

BOYS SOCCER

Patton 6, Freedom 0

The Panthers scored four second-half goals en route to a shutout of the visiting Patriots.

Patton next plays on Tuesday, facing Shelby on the road at 6:30 p.m.

Freedom battles East Burke on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Catawba River Soccer Complex.

East Lincoln 9, Comenius 0 (Monday)

Logan Gilley set an East Lincoln record with six goals as the Mustangs (5-0) won at home.

Chase Gilley added two goals and three assists and Pearson Cunningham scored a goal for East Lincoln.

Miller Towson and Chase Lynch each provided two assists for the Mustangs and Matt Kosmala and Will White combined in goal for a shutout.

East Lincoln’s next match is Thursday at Central Cabarrus (6 p.m.)

Hickory 5, Patton 2 (Monday)

Brayden Rowland scored twice and added an assist as the Red Tornadoes beat the Panthers at Hickory.

Alex Gonzalez, Jaryd Stillwell and Hector Diaz each scored once for Hickory.

Ben Boston had assists twice and Tariq Shuford and Ayden Kelly each had an assist for the Red Tornadoes (2-0-3).

Freedom adds match

Freedom announced it has added a varsity match against Draughn on the road for Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.

GIRLS GOLF

Titans win opening league match

McDowell fired a 135 on Tuesday at the Boone Golf Club, winning the first Northwestern 3A-4A match of the season by 12 strokes.

Freedom shot 147 and Hickory shot 154 for third place.

Anna McDonald of Hickory was medalist with a 36.

Knights win first match (Monday)

Lake Norman Charter, led by Josie Fisher’s nine-hole round of 49, beat Christ The King on Monday with a 149 to win by 25 strokes.

Megan Santos of Christ The King was medalist with a 45. Ellie Burger and Kristine Jones finished at 61 and 68, respectively, for the winners.

Georgia Chapman shot a 50 for Lake Norman Charter.
