DURHAM – Murphy High scored 21 points in the opening quarter on Saturday en route to a 60-27 victory over Pamlico County to win a state 1A football title at Duke.

The Bulldogs (13-1), the No. 3 West seed, won their ninth state football championship and earned head coach David Gentry his 406th career victory.

Pamlico County, the East No. 2 seed, finished 13-2.

Murphy ran for 479 yards.
