Pioneers finish 13-1 after winning Northwestern 3A-4A championship
BOONE – One of the best football seasons in Watauga High history ended Friday night at home.
The top-seeded Pioneers were eliminated by fifth-seeded Weddington 41-14, ending the season at 13-1 under head coach Ryan Habich after winning a Northwestern 3A-4A championship.
Friday’s winner at Mount Tabor advances to North Carolina the next weekend for the West 3AA state title game against No. 4 Cleveland (12-2) or No. 2 Southeast Guilford (13-1).
Watauga, in the postseason for the eighth straight season, had last won an outright conference title in 1980 and last won or shared a league title in 2007.
Habich came to Boone six years ago and has guided Watauga to a 56-20 record.
