Golden Lions face Hibriten in West 2AA final for second straight year

SHELBY – Shelby High ended North Lincoln’s football season on Friday night, winning 35-7 at home in the third round of the state 2AA playoffs.

The fourth-seeded Golden Lions (11-3) go back to No. 2 seed Hibriten (14-0) on Friday to play for the West 2AA title for the second straight year. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. at Storie Memorial Stadium.

Hibriten defeated No. 3 Bandys 31-15 on Friday night in Lenoir to reach a West final for the third consecutive season. The Panthers have won 30 straight games.

North Lincoln — seeded No. 8, finished 10-4 in its first season under head coach Nick Bazzle — a Lincoln County native who returned to coaching after taking two years off. He previously was head coach at Newton-Conover and Alexander Central.

North Lincoln, 4-18 in the previous two seasons, reached the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and matched that season’s team for most wins in school history at 10.
