CATAWBA — Bandys High announced Monday it has hired former Hickory High head girls’ basketball coach Barbara Helms.
She replaces Eric King, who recently resigned after one season.
Helms is nearing 500 career wins — she also coached East Burke girls t0 start her prep varsity coaching career.
Her son, Brandon, is Bandys’ varsity head basketball coach, and he and his dad, Mike, are key varsity football assistants for the Trojans.

Press release re: Bandys Women’s Basketball
Bandys High School Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Coach Barbara Helms as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach.
Coach Helms brings a wealth of coaching experience to the position, having previously served as the Head Coach of Hickory High School for 19 years and Lenoir Rhyne University for 6 years.
During her tenure at Hickory High School, Coach Helms achieved an impressive record of 444 wins and 83 losses, leading her team to numerous victories and accolades. This includes a remarkable undefeated 27-0 season, culminating in a 2015 NC State 3A Championship win.
Additionally, Coach Helms guided her teams to Seven Western Regional, eleven conference, and eleven conference tournament championship titles.
We are thrilled to have Coach Helms lead our basketball program and believe that her expertise and leadership will bring success to our team for years to come.
